Relationships and Health Education (including RSE)

This academic year, Relationships Education and Health Education will become statutory in all primary schools in England.  This new subject will build on the non-statutory lessons we have previously taught in RSE.

As a Catholic school, our mission is to support the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all of our pupils, rooted in the wisdom and teaching of the Church. The education of children in human sexuality is an important, precious and privileged responsibility.  The Church teaches us that this is very much a partnership with parents, in which parents are the ‘first educators’ of their children on these matters.

You may remember from the last spring, before lockdown, that we have decided to follow the programme Life to the Full by Ten Ten Resources, however due to Coronavirus we were unable to hold the parent’s information evening as planned. Life to the Full has been approved by our diocese and we are confident that this programme is a very good fit for our school.

Ten Ten understand the foundational role that parents have in educating and nurturing their children on these matters. Within the programme, they have built in resources which will keep you informed about what is being taught in school, and also give you the opportunity to engage your children in discussion, activity and prayer.

We will also continue to use parts of the programme ‘Journey in Love’ which we have used for many years. It is approved by the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton and by the Catholic Education Service. We will particularly use this material for the topic of Puberty in Yr5 and also for the ‘Sex Education’ part of RSE where conception is taught, in Yr6. We will also continue to use the ‘Busy Bodies’ DVD we have used in school for many years. You will always be given an opportunity to view the material and talk with staff before this is shared with your children. In other year groups parts of Journey in Love may also be used to complement and add to the Ten Ten resources. Please see the attached parent’s guide on Journey in Love for more information.

Your feedback is important

We would like to share the key decisions that we have made regarding the teaching of certain topics, therefore we have opened a consultation and would welcome your comments and feedback.
